| Drake says: "Cartagena is a light race game based on a prison break. Players try to move their six pirates through a tunnel strewn with six types of symbols. The game board maze can be arranged in countless ways to form the tunnel. On a turn, players may either discard a card to enter or advance a pirate to the next matching unoccupied symbol or move a pirate backward to the nearest spot with one or two pirates to draw cards. The first player to get all 6 of his pirates through the tunnel and into the boat wins!"

| John says: "Cartagena is a simple, yet enjoyable board game. This game game is considered to be a great "gateway" game by some people as it has simple game mechanics, yet is fun and stimulating. There are two ways to play: A lighter version which is more luck driven and a more strategic version. This is a great game to introduce new players to designer games!"

Description:
The game recalls the legendary 1672 escape of a large group of pirates from the dreaded fortress of Cartagena. Each player has a crew of 6 fugitives which he tries to hurry through the long and tortuous underground passage that connects the fortress to the waterfront. But the task is not easy, because to move pirates forward in the passage you must play appropriate cards, of which you have only a few, while to replenish your cards, you must move pirates backward again...
To balance these conflicting needs requires good timing and judgement. First player who succeeds in bringing his 6 pirates to the end of the passage and aboard a waiting sloop wins the game. The rules of the game are simple and easy to learn, and they offer two ways of playing: a faster way that gives more scope to luck and a tactical way that requires more skill. Players can choose which way they like best.
